Great Wall Spoken Chinese Courses 


Great Wall Spoken Chinese Course Level 1 (Beginner)

 All students interested in learning Mandarin Chinese are invited to enroll in the Great Wall Spoken Chinese Level 1, offered as a non-credit course through the University of Oklahoma Confucius Institute.

This twelve-week short-term intensive spoken Chinese (Mandarin) course is designed for learners with no previous background of the language to acquire the most basic language knowledge and skill to be able to conduct some basic conversation in the formal as well as informal social settings on a variety of topics. In this course, the Chinese phonetic symbol system, known as “pinyin”, will be introduced for the correct pronunciation of the language. The learning of Chinese characters is optional depending on learners’ interest and ambition. Practical daily conversation topics, such as greetings, introducing, getting information, asking for direction and time, shopping, talking about Chinese culture and food, etc. will be learned with plenty of in-class drilling and practice. The practical goal of the course is to enable learners to apply the knowledge and skill that they learn in class to the actual cultural and social situations.

The registration fee is $30, and this includes course textbook payable by check or credit card. All checks should be made payable to the University of Oklahoma, and due by the first day of the class.

Great Wall Spoken Chinese Course Level 2

This twelve-week short-term intensive spoken Chinese (Mandarin) course is designed for learners with the most basic language knowledge and skill in conducting some basic conversations. This course will focus on more advanced communicative skills in ordering in restaurants, making phone calls, taking messages, describing rooms and houses, choosing different ways of transportation, and asking and offering help. The practical goal of the course is to enable learners to apply the knowledge and skill that they learn in class to the actual cultural and social situations.

1) Have knowledge of Pinyin and able to use Pinyin for very basic communication;

 2) Having learned the most basic 150 Chinese words and expressions;

 3) Having the basic language skills of dates, days, numbers, colors, and directional words.

PREREQUISITE

Great Wall Spoken Chinese Course Level 3

This twelve-week short-term intensive spoken Chinese (Mandarin) course is designed for learners with the most basic language knowledge and skill in conducting some basic conversations. This course will focus on more advanced communicative skills including posting a letter, talking exchange rate, shopping, travelling, and seeing a doctor. The practical goal of the course is to enable learners to apply the knowledge and skill that they learn in class to the actual cultural and social situations.

Prerequisite:

1) Having the knowledge of Pinyin and able to use Pinyin for very basic communication;

2) Having learned the most basic 250 Chinese words and expressions;

3) Having the basic language skills of dates, days, numbers, colors, and directional words.
